Constantia Flexibles’ patented lid concept, ComforLid, is designed to replace snap-on plastic lids and straws with a dual-layered, separable film and achieve a 43% reduction in CO2 impact.
Designed in line with RecyClass guidelines for material separability and high-quality recycling, the lid comprises a polypropylene layer and an aluminium layer. Consumers can separate these layers to recycle the materials in their respective waste streams, but their recycling performance may vary depending on local infrastructure.
During development, these layers were downgauged; the polypropylene layer was downsized from 40g to 35g, while the aluminium’s thickness was reduced from 50 μm to 45 μm.
The product is produced with Constantia Flexibles’ Low Carbon Aluminum, in which the ingot from primary production must not exceed 4 tons CO2e per ton of aluminium and foilstock must remain below 5.5 tons CO2e per ton. This is combined with aluminium sourced from ASI-certified suppliers in Europe.
Through these measures, the company claims to achieve a 43% reduction in CO2 impact compared to previous material specifications.
Constantia Flexibles recommends its ComforLid for ready-to-drink beverage and dairy product applications, such as drink openings for cold coffee or functional openings for mini mozzarella.
Constantia Flexibles recently won two WorldStar Awards for ComforLid, receiving prizes in the ‘Packaging Materials and Components’ and ‘Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ categories.
“The award is an important acknowledgment of our relentless drive for product innovation,” said Marc Rademacher, EVP Consumer Commercial, Group R&D, and Group Sustainability at Constantia Flexibles. “Our focus with ComforLid was to improve material efficiency, lower its carbon impact, and support recyclability through design, while ensuring compatibility with existing filling and sealing equipment.”
In similar news, Cosmo Films has unveiled an anti-fog, transparent BOPET lidding film for food packaging. The film can be securely sealed and easily peeled and, when applied to PET trays, it is said to be recyclable in the mainstream plastic recycling stream.
SÜDPACK has also produced itsSKINPro and Multifol Extreme vacuum and Modified Atmosphere Packaging film solutions, designed to the extend shelf life of perishable fish products and deliver material savings.
