CCL Label has unveiled a portfolio of labels, sleeves, pouches, and lids for dairy packaging, collectively designed for existing recycling streams with the aim of Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) compliance.
EcoFloat is a low-density, floatable sleeve material. It is intended to detach cleanly from PET bottles during the sink-float recycling process for bottle-to-bottle recycling; an EcoFloat White version is also available, offering light-blocking capabilities to help brands switch to a transparent bottle.
Meanwhile, EcoStream HDPE is a pressure-sensitive label designed for HDPE containers like milk bottles. Again, it is said to detach cleanly during the recycling process and align with design-for-recycling guidelines.
Its polypropylene In-Mold Labels (IML) are moulded directly into polypropylene containers to unlock ‘premium’ decoration, durability, and recyclability in dairy cups and tubs. Alternatively, its LDPE stretch sleeves reportedly contain up to 75% recycled content, which require no adhesives or heat to apply, offer 360° branding alongside recyclability.
CCL Label also provides flexible pouches made from ‘recyclable’ polyethylene or polypropylene. Serving as an alternative to multi-material laminates, these solutions are recommended for liquid dairy products and yoghurts.
Additionally, the company’s polypropylene lids combine with polypropylene cups and sleeves to form a mono-material packaging solution. It is recommended as an alternative to conventional aluminium lids.
CCL Label emphasizes that its solutions are designed to lower customers’ carbon footprint and packaging waste by facilitating ‘high-quality’ recycling. They are also believed to align with EPR requirements.
“As regulations tighten and consumer demand for sustainable packaging increases, we are proud to support the dairy industry with packaging solutions that not only meet functionality and branding needs but are also aligned with the future of circular packaging,” says Marika Knorr, gead of Sustainability at CCL Label.
“This new portfolio is a step forward in helping our customers reduce their environmental impact and meet the recyclability criteria outlined in the PPWR proposal.”
Group VP and Beverage Global Reinhard Streit added: “Launching a portfolio designed for the specific needs of the dairy industry, such as light-blocking and other barrier properties, is a result of our ongoing Research and Development work and different business units within CCL collaborating to develop the best products for our dairy customers.
“The high protein trend has energized the dairy industry and we see a lot of innovation happening on the product side that we want to match with the right packaging.”
Other developments from CCL Label include its EcoShear label, which is designed for one-way glass recycling. Apparently, it lowers label contamination to 2% and save 1.5kg of landfill glass waste per tonne.
In similar news, Taghleef Industries has revealed SHAPE360 TDSW, a polyolefin shrink sleeve film designed for applying opaque white labels to clear PET bottles. Its low-density properties are said to enable bottle-to-bottle recycling while unlocking a glossy finish.
