Sabert Europe is targeting a 100% recyclable solution for hot food on the go with its dual-ovenable Hot2Go pack, constituting a natural fibre-based body and optional rPET window.
Said to be free of plastic laminates, Hot2Go is nevertheless described as leak- and grease-resistant with ‘excellent’ insulation properties. It is made from FSC-certified micro-fluted paperboard, and thus claims to be fully recyclable.
The pack is designed with integrated tabs for secure closure, and consumers can opt in or out of a window made of a high clarity, recyclable rPET film. This comes with a guaranteed minimum of 30% recycled content, according to Sabert.
The range comes in 500ml, 750ml, 1000ml, and 1200ml sizes, but tailored solutions are also available. Each pack is manufactured to FSC certification as standard.
“We first introduced Hot2Go as a prototype at the annual Packaging Innovations show at the NEC in February – to ascertain market interest,” says Alex Noake, UK&I managing director and European commercial director at Sabert. “The response was overwhelming, so we immediately moved to the next stage of development.
“Fully recyclable, multifunctional, and entirely free from plastic lamination, the Hot2Go range is microwavable, conventional ovenable, stackable and nestable. Hot2Go offers unrivalled performance for hot food to go, and is also refrigerator and freezer-friendly.”
He continues: “Hot2Go offers a versatile, practical, and dependable packaging solution for all hot food on the go. It is ideal for hot quick service food operators, retail and supermarket hot food grab and go cabinets, while also perfect for café and bakery takeaway and counter service.
“True to our slogan: ‘Sabert makes food look great’, Hot2Go delivers immediate stand-out shelf presence with excellent product visibility.”
Hot2Go comes alongside Sabert’s other sustainability-minded food to go solutions, including Snap2Go for chilled meals – reported to be a fully recyclable container with an anti-fog, high-visibility rPET clip lid.
The Deli2Go solution makes similar claims to full recyclability and features a polypropylene lid with a one-hand closure. It is suitable for both hot and cold foods and is designed to be stackable, nestable, grease-resistant, and refrigerator-friendly.
Additionally, Tray2Go is intended for chilled food, confectionary, and bakery products. With an inner varnish made of PE and a GR coating on one side, it aims for oil and grease resistance; it also features a high-clarity click-lock lid that can be closed with one hand, and feet at the bottom of the pack to protect against conveyor belts in wet food preparation.
An edition of The Brief published earlier this year considered ongoing developments in on-the-go food packaging – weighing up the feasibility of creating recyclable, reusable, compostable, and even smart solutions, and how consumer perceptions of sustainability play a part.
