Kotlin is using Amcor’s lightweight, easy-to-open Sava Flip Top closure to package its ketchup range – targeting material reduction, effective dispensing, and full recyclability.

Made from polypropylene, the Sava Flip Top closure is a 55 mm cap with a 38/400 neck finish. Amcor reports that it is easy to open and close, facilitating no-spill and non-drip dispensing alongside directional control.

It is also believed to be lighter in weight than its previous iterations – delivering ‘significant’ material savings – and to maintain durability for long-term usage. At end-of-life, it can apparently be recycled wherever the appropriate recycling infrastructure is in place.

Various valve types are available, but brand owner Maspex says it selected the TPE valve for Kotlin because it is more widely recyclable than silicone alternatives.

Customers can also choose between different orifices and colours in line with their requirements; Kotlin is utilizing green, red, and blue variants for its ketchup products in 450g, 650g, and 950g sizes.

The closure is part of Amcor’s B Circular Range, which consists of packaging designed for circularity and intended to help brand owners meet and exceed their sustainability goals. Amcor can also supply the Sava Flip Top with complimentary bottles to complete the pack.

“The versatility and convenience of our Sava closure makes it the ideal solution for all types of ketchups and sauces,” said Bartosz Głodowski, Amcor’s regional sales leader in Poland. “Its ease of use and dispensing are particularly suitable for a premium brand like Kotlin, which is focused on maximizing the consumer experience.”

“We are delighted with our new closure,” added Sylwia Bębenek, buyer at Maspex. “It is much lighter than alternative versions currently available without compromising on performance.

“The technical team at Amcor worked closely with us to ensure that it was compatible with our bottles and could run efficiently on the existing filling line.”

In a bid to shorten lead times with localized supply, Amcor has invested in a new production line for the closure at its factory in Wola Rębkowska, Poland.

The news comes after Amcor unveiled its new Hector Child Resistant Closure, described as ‘one of the lightest closures available on the market’ at 7.25g. The polypropylene closure is geared towards household products and aims to balance child resistance with shelf appeal, weight reduction, recyclability, and optional post-consumer recycled content.

Aptar Closures has also developed three tamper-evident and recyclable closures for sports beverages. Designed in line with the Single-Use Plastics Directive, they intend to lightweight their bottles while improving both security and the consumer’s drinking experience.

In other ketchup news, Heinz announced back in 2023 that the ‘100% recyclable’ cap of its Tomato Ketchup squeezy bottles would make the whole pack recyclable in standard kerbside systems and enable 300 million plastic caps to be recycled every year.
