Sonoco has partnered with Lorenz Snack-World to provide a rigid paper can for its Crunchips Stackers snacks, designed to be easier to recycle while ensuring the quality and durability consumers expect.

Unlike other conventional snack cans, Sonoco says the new can contains no aluminium foil in the inner liner and no metal base. Certified as 88% recyclable by Circular Analytics in Germany, a protective layer on the inside ensures the chips remain fresh, offering the same product protection without compromising on environmental performance.

For Sonoco, the collaboration represents another milestone in the development of paper-based packaging innovations. Peter Görlitz, sustainability manager at Sonoco Europe, says: “Lorenz’s decision to use our paper-end can for the Crunchips Stackers shows their clear commitment to responsible packaging. It’s a great example of how paper-based solutions can help brand owners make real progress on recyclability while supporting the circular economy.”

Last year Sonoco teamed up with Kellanova Europe to offer a paper-based and recyclable Pringles tube throughout Ireland. Made from 90% paper, the tube’s design aims to make the entire pack compatible with home recycling bins and the paper waste stream.

More recently Kotányi has implemented Sonoco’s 94% paper-based GreenCan into its new spice range, intending to unlock widespread recyclability and align with the EU Green Deal’s life-cycle approach to circularity. The GreenCan’s high paper content and lightweight structure are expected to lower both plastic consumption and shipping weight.
