Kotányi has implemented Sonoco’s 94% paper-based GreenCan into its new spice range, intending to unlock widespread recyclability and align with the EU Green Deal’s life-cycle approach to circularity.

Reportedly, the body and lid of Sonoco’s GreenCan are made from 94% paper, including 69% recycled paper. Its barrier protection makes up the remaining 6% – a design intended to keep the product safe from moisture, oxygen, and other external factors without compromising the pack’s recyclability.

At the same time, the GreenCan’s high paper content and lightweight structure are expected to lower both plastic consumption and shipping weight. It is set to maintain the strength and durability necessary to protect products in transit and on the shelf.

The pack has been applied to a range of Kotányi’s herb and spice blends, including Cool Chick, Little Italy, Potato Party, Wonder Wok, Curry Crush, and Avocado Love. With the product line catering to vegans and non-vegans alike, Kotányi aims to provide a ‘robust, practical, and widely recyclable’ packaging alternative.

After launching in Austria in May, the repackaged range will hit the German market this month.

“Sustainability is a core principle embedded in all our processes at Kotányi,” said Alexandra Mayr, marketing manager at Kotányi. “For this latest product launch, Sonoco’s GreenCan was the clear choice for our packaging – aligning perfectly with our environmental values.

“The innovative flavours in this new range were specifically developed for a younger audience in mind. Combined with GreenCan’s high paper content, they underscore our brand’s mission: our innovation shapes your enjoyment.

“We’ve already received highly positive feedback from retailers, who have praised both the sustainable concept and the appealing design of the product and its packaging. We look forward to the market’s broader response and are committed to continuing our successful collaboration with Sonoco.”

Axel Tesson, sales manager for Sonoco Consumer Europe, added: “Our partnership with Kotányi signals our commitment to providing the ideal sustainable solutions that reinforce brands’ visions.

“Our GreenCan solution reflects Kotányi’s environmental responsibility without compromising high-quality packaging for the customer.

“We are delighted to be part of this sustainable journey with Kotányi and look forward to what the future brings.”

Other companies utilizing GreenCan in their product ranges include DoggyLove for its plant-based pet treats, and NaturDrops for its natural dog snacks.

Marigold Health Foods has also packed its plant-based stock cubes, sauces, meat and fish alternatives, and other products in Sonoco’s paper-based can. The new design has apparently reduced packaging weight by over 20%, consisting predominantly of paperboard but featuring such secondary materials as an aluminium seal and a plastic LDPE lid.

In other spice-related news, Carmencita and ITC Packaging have jointly developed new paprika packaging with light barrier properties and a two-sided flip-top cap. It is designed to consume less raw material and optimize stackability for better cubage, both of which are hoped to lessen its carbon footprint.
