Graphic Packaging has announced the launch of its Boardio recyclable rigid paperboard canister, designed as an alternative to plastic, glass, and metal containers and said to deliver a plastic reduction of more than 90% versus rigid containers.

Made from up to 90% renewable materials, the company says Boardio has replaced more than 50 million rigid plastic containers in 2023 and 2024. The new machine technology adds format flexibility through additional modules, with its multi-footprint capability enabling Boardio production in multiple shapes - round, octagonal, triangular, and square - along with variable heights, widths, and barrier specifications from a single machine.

Customers can select modules based on the degree of flexibility they require. Graphic Packaging adds that for co-packers managing diverse client portfolios or large brands seeking to differentiate product lines and serve both large families and smaller households, this technology represents a significant operational and commercial advantage. The multi-footprint enhancement is now available as an option for new machine orders.

Johan Werme, head of sales for paperboard canister solutions at Graphic Packaging, said: “This new capability addresses a longstanding frustration customers have had with traditional packaging; rigid plastic and metal canisters typically lock brands into off-the-shelf formats unless they have the volumes to justify custom tooling. Boardio’s new multi-footprint technology means shorter production runs across multiple configurations, the ability to iterate designs more frequently, and the transport and storage efficiency that comes from delivering canisters flat rather than pre-formed.”

In related news, Avantium signed a joint development agreement with Amcor in February to explore the use of Avantium’s plant-based polymer PEF, Releaf, in rigid containers for products including food, beverage, pharmaceutical, medical, home and personal care. Compared to traditional fossil-based plastics, Releaf reportedly has higher mechanical strength that reduces material usage and a lower processing temperature that cuts energy consumption.

In the food packaging space, Sonoco partnered with Lorenz Snack-World this summer to provide a rigid paper can for its Crunchips Stackers snacks, designed to be easier to recycle while ensuring the quality and durability consumers expect. Certified as 88% recyclable by Circular Analytics in Germany, a protective layer on the inside ensures the chips remain fresh, offering the same product protection without compromising on environmental performance.
