Plastipak PET

Plastipak has revealed its pakPET Single Pellet Solution, designed to help manufacturers increase recycled content while maintaining packaging quality, consistency and operational efficiency.

The new solution is a single ready-to-use resin, made with a combination of virgin PET and built-in recycled content. Plastipak says it is suitable for applications including beverage and food containers, personal care packaging and thermoforming applications.

The company states that key benefits of the solution include integrated 30% recycled content, drop-in compatibility with existing PET operations and food-contact approval for some packaging applications. PakPET is also said to deliver simplified processing and qualification, consistent packaging performance and have certified post-consumer feedstock traceability through EN15343 certification.

Manufactured at Plastipak’s facility in Verbania, Italy, the solution is due to be introduced in August.

Plastipak is a finalist in this year’s Sustainability Awards with its O2Blox nylon-free PET oxygen barrier technology for applications including juices, ketchup and salad dressings. The company recently detailed its innovation in a Spotlight article, including its recognition by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) through the Critical Guidance Path program and by RecyClass Technology Approval for clear bottle-to-bottle PET recycling applications.

In other news, Sweden’s Returpack/Pantamera claims to have become ‘the first deposit return system in Europe’ to receive RecyClass certification for its PET bottle sorting process, verifying that the recycled plastic is food-safe and meets EU traceability requirements. According to Returpack, deposit return systems are ‘structurally well-positioned’ for RecyClass certification because each container is identified at barcode level at the point of return.
