SIG and Zydus Lifesciences will distribute liquid cough and cold medication in single-serve, tethered spouted pouches – aiming for precise dosing, improved hygiene, and reduced waste.
Traditional, multi-serve medicine bottles run the risk of imprecise dosing and product waste, SIG explains, especially when the product expires before the bottle can be emptied. Zydus hopes to combat these drawbacks with single-serve pouches in 5ml and 10ml doses, also known as ‘siplets’, of its Deriphyllin CoughGo medicine.
This approach utilizes SIG’s StrawCap 30 Linked pouch. Featuring a built-in straw and tethered closure, it aspires to enable direct, mess-free consumption on-the-go, lower the risk of contamination, and negate the need for tools like spoons and syringes – all while cutting down on plastic pollution.
On that note, the pack is designed to be lightweight and resource-efficient, claiming to use three times less plastic than a conventional pouch closure with a cap. SIG recommends combining the solution with its Terra RecShield film in the future, thus unlocking full design-for-recycling.
The pouches are formed and filled using SIG’s horizontal form-fill-seal machine, Motion Servo 3.2 – a patented servo technology designed for high-precision filling.
“With SIG Motion Servo 3.2 installed at Zydus and SIG StrawCap 30 Linked, we are transforming how liquid medications are delivered – making them easier to dose, safer to consume, and less likely to go to waste,” commented Christoph Wegener, chief markets officer at SIG. “Our partnership with Zydus shows how the right technology can solve real challenges in healthcare delivery.”
“Our goal at Zydus is to make effective medication more accessible and consumer-friendly,” said Dr. Sharvil P. Patel, managing director at Zydus Lifesciences Limited. “Continuing with our patient-centric approaches, we are introducing Deriphyllin CoughGo in single-serve spouted pouches utilizing SIG’s advanced filling technology.
“We have always championed innovation that brings greater convenience for our patients and with this launch we set a new standard for safe intake of medicine which also helps in reducing product waste in India.”
Dhandutt Shah, managing director India for SIG’s bag-in-box and spouted pouch business, continued: “We are excited to collaborate with Zydus to introduce single-serve spouted pouches to India’s pharmaceutical sector, combining SIG’s advanced spouted pouch technology with a shared commitment to quality, safety, and patient wellbeing. This innovation not only benefits manufacturers, it improves the everyday lives of consumers.”
“We are proud to be taking this step together with Zydus, bringing to market an innovation with substantial potential in the pharmaceutical sector,” added Abdelghany Eladib, president and general manager, India, Middle East and Africa at SIG. “Single-serve spouted pouches for pre-portioned pharmaceutials, such as cough syrup, position us as frontrunners in the industry and represent a significant advancement in both patient comfort and safety.”
All the way back in 2018, Cambridge Design Partnership developed its own single-use medicine pouch, focusing on a positive consumer experience for children. The user pushes down on the childproof mouthpiece for access, then squeezes the pack and sucks to intake the precise dosage of medication with a spoonful of honey at the end.
In another collaboration, SIG joined forces with ALCA Corp to distribute its tropical fruit purees, juices, and IQF products in aseptic spouted pouches. These are filled on SIG’s Prime 55 In-Line Aseptic system with in-line pouch sterilization and feature SIG’s CloverCap closure.
