Nana pouch

Amcor has collaborated with Slovenian food and home care company Mediacor to launch a ‘recycle-ready’ spouted stand-up pouch for its Nana brand liquid products in Italy, Germany and Austria.

Amcor says Nana is the first brand to adopt its AmPrima 2 litre refill pouch in the home and personal care sector, aiming to accelerate the shift towards lightweight, mono-material packaging that uses less plastic. Nana has apparently used recyclable PET bottles made with 100% recycled material since its inception.

By using the AmPrima refill pouch, Nana has reportedly reduced the plastic used to package 2 litres of product by up to 80% and lowered the carbon footprint of its packaging by up to 64%, compared to two blow moulded 1 litre PET bottles. These reductions are calculated using Amcor’s ASSET lifecycle assessment model, which is certified by Carbon Trust.

As e-commerce is an important sales channel for the brand, Nana required a solution that was both lightweight and durable. The AmPrima 2 litre refill pouch is said to be International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) 6A certified, meeting rigorous standards for durability in the e-commerce supply chain and withstanding drop tests from 1.5 metres without leaking or breaking.

Nana states that the refill pouch is consistent with the product’s EcoLabel certification, demonstrating to consumers that the product meets stringent environmental standards. Amcor adds that the pouch holds Cyclos-HTP certification for recyclability in Italy, Germany and Austria and can also incorporate post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, helping brands to align with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

In related news, Vanity Group introduced its refillable bottle for hotel amenities in April, available in a pouch or inner-bottle replacement system format. Aiming to cut plastic waste by 93% while improving hygiene and efficiency, both formats are said to be completely recyclable at end-of-life and made from recycled materials.

In a new campaign, L’Oréal has been encouraging consumers to save between 60% and 82% of plastic per refill by adopting its refillable hair care, skincare, and fragrance packaging formats. The product range includes refill pouches for the L’Oréal Paris Elvive hair care line, with one pouch thought to use 60% less plastic than two 250ml shampoo bottles.
