Indorama Ventures and AMB Spa

Indorama Ventures and AMB Spa have unveiled a ‘next-generation’ PET multilayer tray designed for recycling, aiming to meet the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and accelerate circularity for complex food packaging.

The two companies have developed a tray structure which includes recycled PET flakes within the core, while applying virgin food-grade PET to the outer layers. The design is said to match the food safety, optical clarity and sealing performance required by brand owners and regulators while substantially increasing recycled content.

The companies add that the tray remains recyclable after use, creating a material-to-material circular loop that keeps PET in high-value applications. The initiative hopes to offer retailers and brand owners a scalable drop-in alternative to downcycling, and apparently fully aligns with future recyclability and recycled-content requirements under the PPWR, including the target of reaching an average of 30% recycled content in plastic packaging by 2030.

Indorama Ventures says production of the new multi-layer tray structure is already active at its Verdun Recycling facility in France. Finished trays are being supplied to customers in the UK, with broader European deployment in progress.

Last year we heard from Antonello Ciotti, president of Petcore, about the future of Europe’s PET industry, amid soaring costs and global competition increasing. Ciotti warned that the EU ‘must act now’ to save an industry that is crucial to its sustainability and manufacturing ambitions.

In related news, Carbios and Wankai New Materials signed a definitive agreement establishing a strategic partnership for the large-scale deployment of Carbios’ PET biorecycling technology in Asia, with the first step being the construction of a PET biorecycling plant in China. Wankai will be the majority shareholder of the company with a 70% stake, while Carbios will hold the remaining 30%.
