Dreco has packaged its powder detergent in Mondi’s re/loop PillowBag, which contains 50% post-consumer recycled content and is recyclable in existing polyolefin streams.
Mondi’s re/loop PillowBag is designed for recycling and considered compatible with established mechanical recycling streams for polyolefins. Containing 50% recycled content, it is expected to reduce virgin plastic consumption and align with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation’s mandate to incorporate 35% recycled content from post-consumer plastic waste by January 2030.
Mondi has applied a mass balance approach under its ISCC PLUS certification in pursuit of transparency and traceability across its supply chain. The packaging has also been assessed according to Mondi’s Path to Circularity Scorecard and the CEFLEX D4ACE guidelines.
re/loop PillowBag is also designed for cost-effectiveness, convenience and consumer appeal. The easy-opening design is set to streamline practical handling and everyday use, and high-quality print is expected to boost its shelf presence.
By launching the solution across multiple German retailers, Dreco aims to stay ahead of incoming regulatory deadlines and reduce its reliance on virgin plastics.
“Reducing the environmental impact of our packaging is a key priority for us, but performance is critical for products like powder detergent,” says Milo Drehsen, owner and managing director at Dreco. “Working with Mondi has enabled us to introduce a solution that combines high recycled content with the protection our products require. Launching this packaging across retailers in Germany marks an important step in our sustainability journey.”
Sandor Kardos, managing director at Mondi Békéscsaba, adds: “This project shows how technical expertise and shared sustainability goals can deliver practical, scalable solutions. Together with Dreco, we have developed a high-PCR packaging solution for a moisture-sensitive application that is designed for recycling, helping our customer move ahead of regulation while meeting today’s market expectations.”
In similar news, Mondi has helped Werner & Mertz develop a recyclable stand-up pouch containing post-consumer household recyclate for cleaning products. Described as the first on the market to be completely recyclable, the bag is designed to contain 27% post-consumer recyclate and use 70% less plastic than a bottle of the same volume.
Unilever also launched new Persil and Comfort Smart Series detergents are intended for Samsung’s auto-dose washing machines earlier this year. Packaging Europe attended a media panel and interviewed Unilever Home Care chief marketing officer Tati Lindenberg to learn more about the product packaging in the context of Unilever’s ongoing sustainability goals.
