Vegan protein powder and supplement start-up Vetain has switched its packaging to Sonoco’s paper-end GreenCan, a recyclable alternative to the previous metal-end can made with ‘at least 96% paper content’.
Based in Germany, the vegan firm’s products include protein powder, protein bars, nut butters, toppings and supplements. The new can is said to be fully recyclable within the paper stream and meet Europe’s recycling requirements.
Oliver Kock, senior sales manager for Sonoco Consumer Europe, comments: “Initially, Vetain started out using GreenCan with a metal end. However, after the Vetain team expressed its clear commitment to sustainability and keeping its ecological footprint as small as possible, the company started using GreenCan with a paper-end, ensuring its customers can recycle the entire can.”
Vetain’s protein powder and other powder-based products, packaged in Sonoco’s GreenCan with paper-end, are now available in the German market.
Earlier this month Sonoco partnered with Lorenz Snack-World to provide a rigid paper can for its Crunchips Stackers snacks, designed to be easier to recycle while ensuring the quality and durability consumers expect. According to Sonoco, the new can contains no aluminium foil in the inner liner and no metal base.
Also in the food packaging space, Italian pasta company Astrabio (Iris Bio) collaborated with Koehler Paper to develop flexible packaging paper for pasta packs, said to be heat-sealable and maximize shelf life. The paper is said to feature strength properties that make it suitable for further processing on standard packaging machines.
