
UPM Specialty Materials, Michelman and BOBST have teamed up to create two validated paper-based packaging concepts, designed to align with EU packaging rules such as the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
The companies say they have combined fibre-based materials, bio-based coatings and coating line expertise for the ready-to-implement structures, said to deliver strong barrier performance and heat sealability over a wide sealing window. The new packaging concepts aim to deliver functional performance while supporting recyclability and - where relevant - compostability across selected applications.
In terms of implementation, the partners state they have taken into account process requirements and runnability to support efficient industrial production.
The first concept is designed to support SUPD‑compliant paper packaging for applications such as tea bags, oatmeal and sugar stick‑packs, incorporating bio‑based coatings with ‘good’ moisture and mineral oil barriers and heat sealability. The second concept is suitable for applications requiring an improved oxygen barrier level such as single pack cookies and chocolate, said to enable lower coat weights and improved material efficiency.
Sample structures of both solutions will be available at interpack 2026 at UPM Specialty Materials’ stand in Hall 8A, Stand F29 and Michelman’s stand in Hall 8A, Stand B25. The two companies will also be sharing insights in the joint presentation “Simplifying Adoption of Sustainable Packaging for Brands” due to take place Monday, May 11th on the SPOTLIGHT Forum stage.
In similar news, UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt announced a bio and paper-based food packaging concept in March, said to provide strong grease protection and improved end-of-life performance for applications including bakery, fast food and convenience. UPM adds that the components have been individually validated as home compostable.
Michelman recently introduced its bio-based, plastic free Nuvita Life 4002 and Nuvita Life 4605 coatings, designed to deliver high barrier performance while supporting recyclability and compostability for fibre-based retail food packaging applications. Target applications for the new coatings include pouches and sachets for dry foods, flow wraps for food bars, and envelopes for tea.
