UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt have developed a bio and paper-based food packaging concept said to provide strong grease protection and improved end-of-life performance, particularly for bakery, fast food and convenience applications.
UPM says its barrier base papers combined with Paramelt’s bio-based heat-seal and barrier technology deliver a recyclable paper-based solution, with the required grease barrier and sealing performance for food applications. The company adds that the components have been individually validated as home compostable.
The new packaging pairs UPM Solide Lucent or UPM Prego papers - engineered as a base for barrier coatings - with Paramelt’s Aquavate Bio SB 2383, a water-based coating formulated exclusively from biodegradable components. The resulting packaging solution is apparently suitable for a range of food products including bakery, grab-and-go, and other dry or greasy goods.
UPM states the partnership also demonstrates how the coating integrates efficiently with its papers engineered for barrier coatings, enabling low coat weights and reliable performance on existing packaging lines, such as VFFS (vertical form fill seal) lines.
Samples of the solution will be available at Interpack 2026 at UPM Specialty Materials’ stand in Hall 8A, Stand 29 and at Paramelt’s stand in Hall 7, A02B.
In January SmartSolve introduced its PureNil 0 packaging substrate, said to be a 100% bio-based and flushable material designed to replace single-use plastics in consumer-packaged goods. Engineered specifically for dry or powdered product formats, the material runs on standard form, fill, and seal equipment.
More recently, BioPak and Australian ice-cream company Everest teamed up on a nationwide rollout of FSC-certified paper ice cream cups, aiming to deliver the same ‘premium quality and craftsmanship’ with a reduced environmental footprint. The partners also introduced an FSC-certified birchwood spoon, designed by BioPak to fit within Everest’s dixie-style serve.
