In this edition of the Spotlight, MCC Global IML explains how its SealPPeel polypropylene lidding aims to improve recyclability, shelf appeal and deliver a lower carbon footprint.
In the race toward sustainable packaging, there’s a lidding innovation that’s quietly making a big impact: SealPPeel. This polypropylene die-cut lidding goes beyond sealing: it’s a game changer for the recyclability, shelf appeal, and consumer convenience of polypropylene packaging.
SealPPeel is a polypropylene (PP) die-cut lidding solution developed as an alternative to traditional aluminium seals. Designed specifically for rigid PP packaging, it offers improved recyclability with a lower-carbon footprint, while improving consumer convenience and shelf appeal.
Supporting circular packaging design
SealPPeel is engineered to match the container material, creating a mono-material PP packaging solution and thus supporting more efficient sorting and recycling processes. This material compatibility simplifies recycling and improves sorting accuracy by over 14% compared to aluminum*.
Following recyclability tests, the technology has received joint recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in North America and RecyClass in Europe - making SealPPeel the first lidding solution to achieve this transatlantic validation. For packaging professionals working across regions, this recognition provides confidence that the solution aligns with leading design-for-recycling guidelines.
Reducing carbon emissions at the material and process level
Traditionally, aluminum lids have dominated the market. But they come with a catch: they are energy-intensive to manufacture, and they contaminate the plastic recycling stream.
SealPPeel flips the script. The production of polypropylene requires far less energy, resulting in a significantly lower carbon footprint. On top, SealPPeel is printed in CO2 neutral facilities!
Also, you can drastically reduce the energy consumption of your filling line, as SealPPeel gets sealed at significantly lower temperatures.
Designed with consumers in mind
Sustainability also depends on how packaging performs in real life. SealPPeel has been developed with consumer convenience in mind. Opening and/or removal of the lidding goes without tearing or leaving residue on the container rim. When not fully removed, it naturally returns to its original position, offering a sense of hygiene and convenience.

SealPPeel is also microwave-safe and features high puncture resistance, making it suitable for modern consumption patterns such as on-the-go meals, e-commerce distribution and products sold without an additional overcap. These functional benefits help reduce frustration for consumers while maintaining product protection.
Performance without compromise
From a branding perspective, SealPPeel supports high-quality offset printing, enabling vibrant graphics and consistent colour matching with in-mould labelled PP containers. This allows brands to enhance shelf appeal and communication without adding materials or compromising sustainability objectives.

As packaging regulations tighten and sustainability expectations continue to rise, solutions must deliver across multiple dimensions. SealPPeel demonstrates how innovation at the lidding level can contribute to circularity and consumer satisfaction and improved carbon footprint - proving that even small packaging components can drive meaningful change.
