Tosca and Cabka have developed a new circular pallet made from 100% recycled plastic, designed to be safe to use, easy to clean, and compatible with automated pallet handling equipment across Europe.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation sets out mandates for reusable, recyclable, and traceable logistics solutions, and the Euro-Sized Tosca Circular Pallet (CP 1208) aims to comply with both legislation and Extended Producer Responsibility requirements.

Unlike wooden pallets, which are cleaned via fumigation or ISPM-15 heat treatment, the Tosca CP 1208 is considered easy to clean. Made from a ‘unique blend’ of recycled plastic, it features integrated drainage holes to prevent water build-up and avoid moisture retention.

As well as avoiding contamination and damage, this design is hoped to maintain consistent performance in automated storage and retrieval systems. Using recycled content is also hoped to reduce dependence on volatile input markets and stabilize operational costs throughout the year.

Reportedly, the Tosca CP 1208 is 4kg lighter than conventional wooden pallets. This is hoped to make the pallet easier to lift and move across warehouses, packing stations, and retail distribution centres.

With integrated top-deck handles, a stable design and anti-slip features, the pallet is expected to improve handling safety across the supply chain; it is also designed to be splinter-free. Altogether, these features are hoped to reduce physical strain on employees and reduce the risk of physical injuries – supporting the social pillar of ESG requirements.

Rounded skid edges have also been implemented to reduce impact points compared to square skid designs and minimize damage during forklift handling. Integrated deck grooves have also been introduced to lock crates into place without strapping. Apparently, this will facilitate stable, safer double-stacked transport and efficient load handling.

The pallet’s 1200 x 800 mm Euro-standard dimensions are expected to unlock full compatibility and integration with Euro-size pallet handling equipment. This is set to avoid expensive retrofits or process changes.

The Tosca CP 1208 is intended to be repaired, reused, and recycled at end-of-life in a pooling-based circular economy approach, which is hoped to lower total cost of ownership and cut down on waste associated with short-lived, single-use assets.

RFID integration is also believed to improve traceability, asset management, and full visibility across the supply chain.

Designed to serve as a ‘future-proof’ alternative to wooden pallets, the Tosca CP 1208 is recommended for use in applications where hygiene, protection and quality are important factors – for example, FMCG operators, growers and retailers.

“With increasing automation, tighter regulations, and rising sustainability expectations across FMCG and retailers’ supply chains, the demands placed on pallets are evolving,’’ says Laurent Le Mercier, EMEA President at Tosca. “Our new circular pallet gives producers, growers, and retailers a standardized, automation-ready, PPWR-compliant alternative that improves efficiency, enhances worker safety, and supports a truly circular supply chain without disrupting existing operations.

“In high-throughput environments, efficiency and worker safety go hand in hand. By improving stability, grip and ease of handling, the Tosca CP 1208 helps reduce manual strain and the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, creating safer working conditions while supporting operational performance.

“At Tosca, we don’t simply supply a pallet. We partner with customers to manage assets and deliver supply chain performance, meet regulatory requirements, and turn circularity into a lasting competitive advantage.”

“This pallet demonstrates what circular logistics should look like in practice,’’ adds Alex Masharov, CEO of Cabka. “By transforming recycled plastic into high-performance transport assets, we enable supply chains that are both more efficient and more sustainable. Together with Tosca, we are showing how circular materials can become the new standard for FMCG, retail and wider logistics.’’

Previously, Tosca’s ‘wood-look’ reusable crates were introduced to help Megamark transport, distribute, and display fresh products at point-of-sale. This was anticipated to improve logistics while lowering operational costs and environmental impact.

In other pallet news, it was announced this time last year that Superglass would ship its glass mineral wool insulation on The Pallet LOOP’s reusable green pallets. The move sought to reduce carbon footprint by 40% while enhancing pallet strength by 25%.
