ThermoSafe has launched a biodegradable expanded polystyrene (Bio EPS) pallet shipper for the life sciences and healthcare logistics industries, said to deliver consistent 120-hour thermal performance at 2°-8°C.

The ChillTherm Bio pallet shipper is designed for high-volume distribution of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and biologic products and aims to ensure regulatory compliance and reduce excursion risk. Arriving flat-packed for efficient storage, ThermoSafe says it supports scalability without sacrificing warehouse space or operational flexibility.

The company says biodegradable expanded polystyrene (Bio EPS) performs identically to standard EPS in terms of thermal insulation, durability, and distribution testing, but can either be recycled via drop-off programs alongside standard EPS or biodegrade over 90% within four years in a microbial-rich landfill environment.

ThermoSafe claims that in comparison, standard EPS showed just 5.75% biodegradation in the same timeframe. It adds that the solution has potential to reduce landfill mass while supporting EPS recycling stream, where facilities exist.

The design apparently saves time and labour for operators and eliminates the need for bench-conditioning of coolants. ThermoSafe states that with a full Euro pallet payload capacity and a lighter tare weight than leading alternatives, shippers also benefit from lower freight costs.

In related news, Domino announced the launch of its new Mx350i-eP electric pallet labeller in January, designed for improved efficiency and said to require up to 40% less energy and up to 50% less factory air than previous generation pallet labellers. Apparently, the Mx350i-eP has been designed with intelligent technological enhancements to allow for operation without additional safety guarding, enabling seamless integration onto pallet labelling lines and easy operator access to the machine.

Superglass recently stated it will distribute its glass mineral wool insulation on The Pallet LOOP’s reusable green pallets from April, anticipating to reduce the carbon footprint by 40% and enhance pallet strength by 25%. The Pallet LOOP, part of BSW Group, aims to save timber and reduce the waste generated in the production and use of conventional ‘white’ pallets by replacing them with reusable alternatives.
