
Henkel has released the ‘first’ cold seal solution designed for barrier-coated paper packaging, Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, driven by the growing ‘paperization’ trend and compatible with mechanical paper recycling.
The company states that regulatory requirements on packaging recyclability such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and increased customer interest in sustainable packaging alternatives are the main factors for the switch. The new solution is said to ensure process-reliable production of recyclable packaging structures, creating a secure seal without heat exposure.
Suitable for applications in the snack and confectionery segments but also collection cards or secondary packaging that previously required plastic structures, the solution is part of Henkel’s RE range, developed for recycling-compatible packaging design that ‘verifiably supports’ the re-utilizing materials.
Henkel states that Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE provides a strong permanent seal and consistently high-quality application, even at high line speeds. The cold seal coating ensures stable application on a wide range of paper grammages and has ‘excellent’ ageing properties.
The coating also tolerates typical migrants from paper substrates, preventing process-related fluctuations in performance. According to Henkel, as sealing is achieved without thermal exposure, product quality and aroma are preserved while the mechanical stress on packaging material remains minimal.
In related news, Lecta has expanded its range of metallized papers with Metalvac Ice Cream, a paper said to meet the current technical performance, industrial efficiency and sustainability requirements in the frozen food sector. The paper is said to be recyclable within the paper and cardboard recycling stream, in accordance with CEPI recyclability standards.
This month Yangi announced it has used its Cellera technology to produce a dry-formed fibre tray for meat, fish, deli, and ready meals – aiming to extend product shelf life, unlock a ‘premium’ surface quality and reduce CO2 impact by approximately 80%. Reportedly made from renewable and responsibly sourced virgin fibres, the tray is available in bleached and unbleached options.
