Futamura, flexible packaging company Repaq and machine producer GK Sondermaschinenbau have teamed up to create a compostable solution for liquid sachet packaging, designed for wrapping ingredients such as ketchup, mustard and cooking sauces or hand cream.
The solution is said to be fully compostable and based Futamura’s NatureFlex technology, including a barrier cellulose film layer from Futamura and another biofilm to provide hermetic seals. The structures have been certified as compostable in both industrial and home settings.
The compostable packaging structures are being produced on newly designed GK Sondermaschinenbau machinery. Futamura says the demonstration packs delivered have confirmed the required shelf life and protection for a range of sauces.
Reportedly, the machineability of the new liquid sachet packs have been proven at scale by the first brands implementing the compostable structure. For all GKS machinery, there is said to be no difference in efficiency when using this structure compared to a conventional one.
The first commercial sachets are anticipated to enter the market shortly.
At the start of 2025, Australian-based brand Conserving Beauty announced it would be using Futamura’s renewable and compostable NatureFlex films in the sachet packaging for its dissolvable cleansing wipes. The NatureFlex films are apparently produced from renewable wood pulp, harvested from responsibly managed plantations and meet all the relevant standards for industrial composting.
In similar news, Aveda, part of Estée Lauder Companies (ELC), has announced the global launch of its recyclable sample sachets, said to reduce plastic by over 80% compared to its 10ml plastic tubes. The sachet began its global rollout in February with the launch of Aveda’s Botanical Repair Bond Building Pre-Shampoo Treatment.
