BASF and Metpack

Metpack has introduced its Ezycompost coated paper and paperboard, reportedly home compostable and coated with BASF’s ecovio 70 PS14H6 biopolymer, said to have excellent barrier properties against liquids, fats, grease and mineral oil and temperature stability at boiling water up to 100°C.

BASF’s ecovio coating is apparently food-contact approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ezycompost aims to give paper packaging manufacturers and food brands certainty that food packaging articles made from the new paper can be safely used by consumers and create no persistent microplastics in home compost after use.

Metpack states the paper can be used for food-contact applications such as hot and cold cups, pots and trays for deep-freezing or microwave use. It can be manufactured on standard forming lines, said to enable faster coating speeds and 40% thinner coating compared to polylactic acid (PLA).

According to BASF, its ecovio material shows no adhesion to chill roll and can be processed by mono or co-extrusion without adhesives. Typical applications for ecovio include organic waste bags, cling film and fruit and vegetable bags, as well as agricultural mulch films and food packaging applications.

After usage, Ezycompost food packaging coated with ecovio can be composted in garden home compost according to national legislation.

In April Finnish start-up Fiberdom reported that it had secured €3.5 million in funding to develop and scale its patented technology which creates a ‘100% plastic-free’ material, seeking to replace non-essential plastics with scalable, circular solutions. The product aims to tackle the challenges of existing fibre-based solutions such as limited formability and strength in demanding applications, often requiring additives that can compromise recyclability.

The same month, packaging film supplier SÜDPACK, food service company Werz and BASF Gastronomie teamed up to utilize BASF’s polyamide Ultramid Ccycled material for meat and sausage packaging in the hotel, restaurant and catering sector. The underlying high-barrier packaging film is reportedly manufactured according to the current German minimum standard and rated as recyclable in the polyethylene film stream.
