Amcor has collaborated with Lorenz Snacks to launch new ‘recycle-ready’ packaging for its Lentil Coated Peanuts product, which has a reported 51% carbon footprint reduction.
Lorenz has apparently a “good” rating for recyclability across 92% of its primary packaging from third-party cyclos-HTP, with a target to convert the remaining percentages to highly recyclable by the end of 2025.
Lorenz’s Lentil Coated Peanuts pack is based on Amcor’s AmPrima portfolio of mono-material packaging options. The new packaging is said to achieve a 51% reduction carbon footprint and water consumption, and 41% reduction in non-renewable energy use. Amcor says this applies when based on cradle-to-grave analysis of baseline packaging vs. AmPrima packaging, assuming 100% incineration with energy recovery for the baseline packaging, and 100% mechanical recycling for the new packaging.
Apparently, the packs are certified for recyclability by cyclos-HTP in the countries where PE or PP recycling streams exist and align with CEFLEX design for a circular economy guidelines. Amcor states that traditional nut packaging relies on multi-material composites to protect the product inside, which are usually non-recyclable –however, the AmPrima solution is a mono-material solution which retains these properties.
“The Amcor AmPrima solution preserves barrier protection, physical durability, and visual appeal while enabling consumers to easily recycle packs – something that was typically not possible before,” said Piotr Nagalski, sales and marketing director for Snacks & Confectionery at Amcor.
In similar news, INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe, PepsiCo and Amcor teamed up in March to launch snack packaging for Sunbites crisps containing 50% recycled plastic. The new packaging was launched in the UK and Ireland for PepsiCo’s snack brand Sunbites in late 2023.
More recently, food company Kellanova revealed that Pringles is launching its first bagged snack in 15 years, Pringles Mingles. The puffed snacks mix two different Pringles flavours and are due to be rolled out in retailers nationwide in October.
