In our latest Spotlight, Saica presents Saica Fresh - a complete range of packaging solutions designed to keep products fresh for longer and add value from the field to the consumer, ensuring food safety at all times.
In the competitive fresh produce market, protecting quality, reducing waste, and standing out at the point of sale are key priorities. Saica, true to its mission of delivering sustainable solutions for recycled paper and packaging manufacturing, as well as waste management and recovery, developed Saica Fresh.
It is built on five key pillars and unique value propositions: food science, turnkey solutions, innovative products, research, development and innovation (R&D&I), and sustainability.
With Saica Fresh, producers, packers, and retailers can optimise their packaging processes, extend product shelf life, reduce waste, and meet their sustainability goals.
1. Food science applied to shelf life
Fresh produce is alive, and treating it accordingly is the first step toward excellence. Saica Fresh designs safe packaging solutions that extend shelf life, preserve quality, and reduce food waste by up to two additional days, depending on the type of product.
We conduct shelf-life testing at our facilities, replicating customer conditions and studying product behaviour to achieve shelf-life extensions of up to two days. Using perforation technologies such as laser, hot-needle, punch-hole, and hybrid systems, we regulate oxygen and humidity levels to create a modified atmosphere that protects fruits and vegetables without the need for preservatives. The result? Fresher food and less waste.
2. Turnkey solutions: productivity from day one
Saica Fresh offers more than just packaging; we provide comprehensive support for the automation of your production process. From machine installation to after-sales service, our turnkey solutions enable efficient packaging line optimization.
Additionally, we offer support during the adaptation of customer production lines to integrate our solutions seamlessly.
3. Innovative and sustainable products
Saica Fresh delivers a one-stop packaging solution through a combination of corrugated and flexible products. From recycled cardboard trays and punnets to paper labels, paper grouping bands, and recyclable mono-material films, we offer a full range of packaging made with sustainability in mind.
Customized formats and tailored branding ensure that packaging not only protects and preserves but also communicates effectively. Your brand is present on every shelf, supported by materials that guarantee product safety, performance, cost-efficiency, and recyclability.
4. Customer-focused R&D&I
With a multidisciplinary team of over one hundred professionals and development centres across Europe, innovation is a fundamental pillar at Saica.
We provide expert packaging consultancy through simulations, physical and digital prototypes, and advanced logistics analyses, in collaboration with leading research institutions such as ITA (Aragon Institute of Technology).
Our team works closely with customers to accelerate the launch of new solutions, reduce risks, and improve product functionality tailored to specific needs. Our partnerships with equipment suppliers and original equipment manufacturers allow us to access the best technologies to create new products and services and enhance process efficiency, ensuring product quality.
5. Commitment to sustainability
From an environmental perspective, our priority is to offer designed for recycling—and whenever possible, recycled content packaging. We continue to invest in research to deliver 100% recycled packaging solutions.
We also strive to reduce the carbon footprint of our products, helping our customers meet their decarbonisation targets.
By applying a cycling perspective from product and service design through to end-of-life, we promote a transition to a sustainable model based on the Circular Economy.
With an end-to-end (E2E) approach, from field to table, our Cost of Ownership tool allows us to quantify supply chain benefits and the greenhouse gas emission impact of packaging on our customers’ operations.
In summary, with this global product life cycle perspective, we offer services that aim to:
- Help our customers reduce their environmental impact.
- Support retailers in identifying and assessing risks.
- Lower the overall cost impact (Cost of Ownership) of packaging and transport solutions.
