Liwayway Vietnam and BioTech have adapted LIMEX Pellet - a limestone-based material from Japanese firm TBM - for their flagship snack and liquid detergent product packaging.

LIMEX is said to contain 50% or more inorganic material such as calcium carbonate and reduce plastic usage and greenhouse gas emissions compared to petroleum-based plastics. The material is compatible with traditional plastic moulding methods, allowing the use of existing moulding machines.

The companies state that Vietnamese brands are ‘racing to comply’ with the government’s new environmental regulations and meet growing public demand for greener products. They cite a survey by PwC that indicates more than 90% of respondents in Vietnam are willing to pay more for products with verified origin and products using sustainable materials.

In addition, due to using limestone as its main raw material, LIMEX reportedly has high price competitiveness compared to other environmentally friendly materials. LIMEX Pellet is currently being used in three different sizes of refill pouches for BioTech’s flagship detergent product, Bio Clean. In the future, TBM and BioTech plan to promote the use of LIMEX Pellet in other products.

In March, TBM announced that Liwayway Vietnam had adopted LIMEX Pellet for its snack packaging, said to meet the brand’s quality requirements and reduce costs. The pellet has a ‘luxurious matte texture’ due to using calcium carbonate as the main raw material and is being utilized for three VIETNAM LIWAYWAY product lines.

This month Mondelēz International filed a lawsuit against Aldi, alleging that the packaging designs for several of its private-label products infringe trademarked visual properties and harm the reputation of several Mondelēz brands. Side-by-side images compare the colour schemes, typography, and on-pack images of the Mondelēz and Aldi-brand packaging, with the overlap said to “dilute the distinctive quality of Mondelēz’s unique product packaging”.
