Australian company Bouncee has designed a collapsible crate for transporting food and pharmaceutical items, aiming to deliver high-quality temperature control, insulation cost reductions at scale. We spoke to CEO Hamish Hingston to learn more about this product, which recently won in the Transit category in the WorldStar Global Packaging Awards 2025.
Hingston says Bouncee is mainly suitable for short-transit applications (under 14 hours) such as grocery e-commerce and pharmacy distribution. It seeks to solve major industry pain points by maintaining the full internal volume for goods, low weights, long service life, and high-performing temperature control while also adding space efficiency and modular repairability.
The crate design was reportedly inspired by demand from several multinational retailers, who requested the company adapt one of its previous packaging innovations into a reusable format for chilled and frozen grocery delivery. Drawing on the collapsible Reusable Plastic Crates (RPCs) used worldwide in produce logistics, the company sought to develop ‘the first true insulated collapsible RPC’.
Apparently, the crates also aim to deliver the lowest total cost per use in its category. During research and development, all aspects were developed in-house, from the patented folding crate and hinge design to the tailored coolant bottles and customized tooling and machinery.
Hingston adds that the complex engineering demands around service life, ease of use, cost and thermal performance required extensive testing and collaboration between the company’s R&D team, industry and end users.
Bouncee can be utilized by businesses needing to hold food or pharmaceuticals within safe temperature limits during picking, packing, staging or delivery processes. This includes grocery delivery, pharmacy distribution, hot or cold catering and sample collections.
Looking ahead, Hingston states that the company plans to launch several new Bouncee crate formats and sizes over the next 12 to 24 months to support a broader range of applications.
