Smurfit Westrock has officially opened its Horizon packaging facility, said to be the ‘world’s first’ designed exclusively for pharmaceutical patient medication adherence, regulated pharma packaging and clinical trials.
The company says the facility will be operated under the Smurfit Westrock Adherence & Clinicals (SWA&C) division with a 170-person team of skilled designers, operators and support functions. The facility also has an Experience Centre which demonstrates its capabilities for visitors’ individual requirements and promotes client collaboration, exploring potential partnerships to advance healthcare solutions.
It will operate with the same focus as its sister Smurfit Westrock facilities in Kunshan, China and Mebane, North Carolina in the US in supporting clients with global support and service.
Brian Sheridan, VP Sales Global for Smurfit Westrock Adherence & Clinicals, commented: “We are excited to introduce HORIZON, not only a world class facility, but the world’s first facility that dedicated to providing full-service packaging solutions with best in class capabilities for Adherence & Clinicals. Our extensive investment in leading edge technology including cold chain testing and electronics assembly testing, combined with the experience, expertise and passion of our team, will deliver speed to market for clients and patients alike.”
Last month the company developed a corrugated cardboard solution for medical device company Dermalux, designed to protect products during transit and replace the previous expanded polystyrene (EPS) and plastic packaging. The new solution for Dermalux’s clinic-only devices, aiming to securely package all parts of the device during transport, allow for easy assembly factoring in the heavy main body of the device, and enhance the customer unboxing experience.
Back in May, we spoke to Hamish Hingston, CEO of Australian company Bouncee about its collapsible crate for transporting food and pharmaceutical items, aiming to deliver high-quality temperature control and insulation cost reductions at scale. The crate seeks to solve major industry pain points by maintaining the full internal volume for goods, low weights, long service life, and high-performing temperature control while also adding space efficiency and modular repairability.
