Aiming to address challenges such as temperature limitations and short-term greaseproof protection, YutoEco has unveiled its plant-based FluoZero solution, said to withstand temperatures from -34°C to 220°C and be suitable for applications including frozen food packaging, airline meals, and high-temperature food containers for fried foods.

The company says FluoZero is entirely plant-based and made from agricultural by-products. It adds that FluoZero-treated products have a super-dense physical structure that effectively resists grease and temperature resistance capabilities that maintain long-term protection (8 hours).

YutoEco claims that products made with FluoZero are thinner yet stronger than traditional moulded fibre products with increased bending stiffness and bursting strength. This is said to reduce shipping costs and accelerate the performance iteration of moulded fibre products such as cutlery and paper-based non-packaging structural components.

Apparently, the FluoZero technology has obtained US Department of Agriculture (USDA) biobased certification and compostable certifications from BPI and Din Certco, while meeting FDA food contact regulations. As well as in the catering industry, YutoEco says the technology has potential in industrial packaging for products like hair dye mixing trays.

Seda International launched its fibre-based EcoFit Lid for hot and cold beverages in January, anticipated to save CO2, water, and 400 tons of plastic for every 100 million lids. Claiming to be crafted from 100% certified renewable fibres, it is fully recyclable in the paper stream and a compostable version is also available.

As part of our Sustainability Perspectives podcast, Elisabeth Skoda recently spoke with Ankur Gupta, co-founder and chief business officer at Cirkla, about the role moulded fibre packaging can play when it comes to finding alternatives to plastic packaging. He also discussed what drives the shift, challenges companies face when wanting to make the switch, and how product innovations such as fibre MAP trays support it.
