Seda International has revealed its fibre-based EcoFit Lid for hot and cold beverages, set to save CO2, water, and 400 tons of plastic for every 100 million lids.

The lid claims to be crafted from 100% certified renewable fibres. Across its supply chain, it is believed to offer the lowest cradle-to-grave CO2 emissions and water consumption of any fibre lid currently available on the market.

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted using EU data suggests that the EcoFit Lid achieves an improved environmental performance compared to moulded fibre, polystyrene, and polypropylene lids. A gate-to-gate screening conducted by Seda also suggests that the lid lowers production cycle water and energy consumption, alongside reduced carbon emissions compared to moulded fibre lids.

Apparently, it is fully recyclable in the paper stream, and a compostable version is also available. As such, it is hoped to ‘massively reduce’ the consumption of fossil fuels in plastic lid production.

Designed to be used with Seda’s printable paperboard Double Wall cups (including the Double Wall Cold Cups, which feature a patented air gap design to keep cold beverages cool and prevent condensation), the lids are reportedly leak- and spill-resistant, with an audible snap confirming that the lid is fixed tightly and securely for transit and sale. Consumers are said to receive a ‘superior’ drinking experience for both hot and cold beverages.

Customers can tailor their consumer experience with EcoFit Lids available in Flat and Domed options, a choice of a triangular or oval sip hole, and a C-cut, cross-cut, or push-and-lift action for opening. Seda’s ‘cutting-edge’ printing technology can also be used to enhance customer branding.

Brands are encouraged to utilize the EcoFit Lid in pursuit of their own sustainability goals, as well as to lower the carbon footprint of the whole packaging supply chain. Additionally, the lid aims to comply with developing legislation and environmental regulations across Europe.

“Our new EcoFit Lids and compostable Double Wall cold cups underscore Seda Group’s dedication to continuous innovation and sustainability,” said Armando Mariano, director of Innovation, R&D, Materials, and Sustainability at Seda Group. “These products were designed with the future in mind, addressing environmental concerns and evolving consumer demands.

“By significantly reducing water consumption and CO2 emissions, our EcoFit Lid sets a new benchmark in sustainable beverage packaging. We are proud to offer solutions that not only comply with stringent regulations but also enhance the consumer experience while helping brands make meaningful progress towards their sustainability goals.”

In a similar development, Berry Global has released a recyclable, multi-purpose sip lid for its Reusable Cup range. Made from ‘widely recyclable’ polypropylene, it is also designed with a liquid-tight fit and comes in a variety of standard colours, including an NIR-detectable colourant to ensure that black lids are recyclable at end-of-life.

Huhtamaki and Starbucks also served cold beverages in moulded fibre lids and double-walled paperboard cups with a bioplastic liner in a trial at select US locations. This was set to comply with the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in California and Minnesota, and to help Starbucks pursue its own sustainability targets, including using 50% less virgin fossil fuel-derived materials in its packaging production.

Meanwhile, Blue Ocean Closuresfibre-based cap has been applied to Great Earth’s nutritional supplements. This is hoped to fulfil increasing consumer demand for sustainable packaging design by phasing out plastic alternatives.
