Greiner Packaging has revealed its Click On and Click In sealing lids, designed to facilitate a mono-material, resealable, and recyclable pack that extends shelf life and reduces CO2 across the value chain.

The Click On lid is intended for ‘straightforward’ application without any modification to the cup. Described as a ‘user-friendly’ solution, it can apparently maintain its strength even when the cup is on its side or upside down. Customers can also choose between two tab styles for increased versatility.

Meanwhile, the Click In lid is geared towards products that require secure sealing and thorough protection. It can reportedly be pressed back onto the cup after the initial opening, with consumers able to see and hear the lid lock into the rim of the cup.

Although it requires a minor modification to the cup rim to facilitate the locking function, this option is said to ensure leak protection even in transit. It is designed to integrate ‘seamlessly’ and apply to thermoformed and injection-moulded cups.

Both developments are set to form a two-component pack consisting of a cup and lid, eliminating the need for a third component such as aluminium foil. Each lid can be sealed using standard sealing technologies, including thermal and ultrasonic sealing, and can be customized for individual customer requirements.

According to Coveris, both components can be manufactured from the same material, including polypropylene, PET, or rPET. Taking a mono-material approach is expected to improve the whole pack’s recyclability and lower CO2 emissions across the value chain compared to conventional snap-on lids with aluminium foil.

Both lids are reclosable. As such, Greiner recommends their use for larger-volume products that are consumed over time, with the lid set to protect the product from contamination and help extend its shelf life.

A similar development came to light earlier this year with the reveal of Grupo Lantero’s ReKeepEat solution. Consisting of a mono-PET tray and resealable lid, it is designed to keep foods fresh for longer and simplify recyclability. The pack utilizes recycled content and is set to simplify both the manufacturing and disposal processes by avoiding mixed materials.

Another development from Greiner Packaging is a self-separating packaging solution, now utilized by Greggs, Asda, Lidl, M&S, Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons for their own-brand instant porridge pots. These are believed to achieve a recyclability rate of up to 98%.
