Capsule-Constantia

Greiner Packaging has partnered with Constantia Flexibles to produce a home compostable coffee capsule solution, which recently won in the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2025. We spoke to Taner Ertan, Global Business Development manager at Greiner Packaging, to find out more.

Greiner Packaging provides the body of the capsule while Constantia Flexibles contributes its EcoPressoLid, with the product certified as “OK Compost Home” by TÜV Austria. The capsule body is produced using a biobased polymer and developed through an advanced injection moulding process, resulting in a design with high barrier performance for preserving the coffee’s aroma and freshness.

Ertan states that the capsule is compatible with standard coffee capsule machines to ensure a ‘seamless experience’ for consumers without requiring any change in preparation habits. Once used, the entire capsule system can be disposed of in a home composting environment.

Aiming to deliver a sustainable alternative to the rigid plastics single-serve market, Ertan says the compostable capsule format also provides opportunities for a range of single-serve products including tea, beverage concentrates and other portioned liquids. This versatility makes the solution applicable across various segments in the beverage industry.

In future, the company plans to expand its offerings in the home compostable space, seeking to deepen collaborations with brand owners and develop new designs tailored to specific customer needs and product requirements.
