Amcor and DCM

Amcor has partnered with plant care company DCM on a ‘recycle-ready’ mono-material polyethylene (PE) film for its European fertilizer portfolio, incorporating 35% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and said to reduce its carbon footprint by 17%.

The film replaces DCM’s previous multi-material packaging structure, which was not designed for recycling in existing recycling streams. The new material is available in sizes ranging from 650 grams to 7 kilograms.

The film is engineered using a combination of machine-direction oriented polyethylene (MDO PE) and a functional sealant layer. Amcor says the MDO structure offers reliable protection against gas and moisture ingress while maintaining high tensile strength and resistance to tearing or puncturing.

The company states that the pack’s secure seal reduces outer-layer deformation, and the film’s rigidity helps smaller packs stay upright on shelf. A high-gloss finish aims to improve brand visibility and consumer appeal at point of sale.

Amcor adds that its carbon reduction data is based on a cradle-to-gate comparison of standard 110µm virgin mono-PE film vs 110µm 35% PCR mono-PE film, with the carbon footprint reduction calculated using Amcor’s ASSET lifecycle assessment model, certified by the Carbon Trust.

Last year Amcor revealed its range of rigid and flexible packaging solutions for de-icing salt, designed for compatibility with up to 100% recycled plastic content, easy pouring and storage. The packs are believed to minimize clumping by implementing moisture protection and be ‘recycle-ready’ at end of life.

In other news, Greiner Packaging unveiled its Click On and Click In sealing lids, designed to facilitate a mono-material, resealable, and recyclable pack that extends shelf life and reduces CO2 across the value chain. The Click On lid can apparently maintain its strength even when the cup is on its side or upside down, with two tab styles available.
