As part of our Finalist Interview series ahead of this year’s Sustainability Awards, we spoke to Mondi about its Ad/Vantage StretchWrap, nominated in the Commercialized Renewable Materials category and said to combine high stretchability and puncture resistance.
You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2025. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarize your entry, in less than 50 words?
Ad/Vantage StretchWrap is Mondi’s recyclable kraft paper for pallet wrapping. Made from responsibly sourced fibres, it combines high stretchability and puncture resistance, providing a paper-based alternative to plastic stretch film that ensures secure transport and supports a circular economy.
Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your project and/or about its impact on packaging sustainability.
Ad/Vantage StretchWrap challenges the industry norm of using plastic stretch film by offering a fibre-based alternative made from renewable material. It delivers high stretchability, puncture resistance and load stability - ensuring reliable pallet transport.
Designed for recycling, it supports a circular economy. A life cycle assessment (LCA) found that StretchWrap has a significantly lower environmental impact compared to both virgin and recycled-content plastic stretch films, particularly in categories such as climate change and fossil resource use.
Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g. how your innovation/initiative has been received by the industry, or what the next steps are in commercialization/product development?
Ad/Vantage StretchWrap has been well received across industries seeking to reduce their reliance on fossil-based materials. Acceleration tests and real-world transport trials have confirmed its effectiveness in stabilizing loads under demanding conditions.
With high recycling rates for fibre-based packaging and existing paper collection infrastructure, it offers a scalable and commercially viable path forward. Mondi continues to support customers in integrating this solution into their supply chains while ramping up production to meet growing demand.
The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2025 will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Utrecht on 10-12 November. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
