Sun Grape California has introduced a new Machine Direction Oriented Polyethylene (MDOPE) grape bag, said to reduce the use of traditional plastics by utilizing a recyclable, mono-material film.

Sun Grape says it expects up to 15 grape varieties to be packed this season under the Dole, Ocean Spray and Sun Grape brands, along with custom private label options. The new packaging bag is designed to meet the evolving expectations of both consumers and retailers.

The MDOPE bags are said to have passed rigorous shelf-life tests in cool storage, demonstrating ‘excellent’ durability, breathability and product protection, aiming to ensure grapes arrive fresh while helping reduce their overall carbon footprint.

In related news, SHARPAK recently agreed on a commercial partnership with OSY Group to apply its food technology to soft fruit packaging, aiming to extend shelf life and reduce food waste. OSY Group says its antimicrobial coating enables food to stay fresh for longer by leaving microscopic pins on packaging surfaces which puncture and kill microbes, slowing the natural spoiling process that affects the produce within.

Coveris collaborated with the Metis plums brand at the start of this month to debut its new paper-based LinerlessLid and punnet packaging in Tesco, aiming to align quality, environmental responsibility and consumer appeal. Coveris’ says the new packaging provides an alternative to plastic whilst achieving efficient packing speeds using automated Ravenwood machinery.
