Mondi and Zarelo

Mondi and Zarelo have partnered to introduce a recyclable paper-based packaging solution for fire starters used in fireplaces and barbecues, designed to deliver strength and durability while protecting the fire starters from moisture during storage and transport.

The solution is made from Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 which the company says is produced in-house, made from FSC and PEFC certified paper. It is said to be recyclable in existing European paper recycling streams where facilities are in place.

Zarelo’s fire starter range includes coiled wood fibres and compact cubes packed in three sizes: 32 pieces, 1 kg, and 2 kg. The packaging ensures puncture resistance and durability, protecting the products throughout transport and handling. Zarelo says its high-quality printability enhances brand visibility at the point of sale, strengthening its presence in retail chains.

Apparently, the transition to re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 allowed Zarelo to switch from a manual to automated filling process, improving production efficiency and optimizing resources. The coated paper runs smoothly on Zarelo’s vertical filling line that converts, fills and securely seals the paper bag without the need for additional materials such as glue.

Last year Antalis Packaging added recyclable, biodegradable paper strapping and paper-based documents enclosed wallets to its e-commerce portfolio, hoping to replace unnecessary single-use plastics with sustainability-minded solutions. Described as 100% recyclable and biodegradable, the paper strapping reportedly offers a breaking strain of 70kg and is safer to handle than conventional plastic or metal strapping solutions.

In January, 2nd Level Global Solutions announced its paper-based Solaris range of thermal pallet covers, developed in response to plastic waste concerns in the logistics sector. The range is recyclable, designed to resist water and tearing and to protect products against damage and other hazards.
