Antalis Packaging has added recyclable, biodegradable paper strapping and paper-based documents enclosed wallets to its e-commerce portfolio, hoping to replace unnecessary single-use plastics with sustainability-minded solutions.

Described as 100% recyclable and biodegradable, the paper strapping reportedly offers a breaking strain of 70kg. It is said to be safer to handle than conventional plastic or metal strapping solutions, and is apparently seamless to integrate into traditional strapping machines.

Meanwhile, the paper-based documents enclosed wallets are designed to be cost-effective, secure, and waterproof. Their self-adhesive backing intends to unlock quick and easy application.

Whereas traditional plastic wallets require separation, Antalis says its paper-based alternative can be recycled with the carton – a development set to improve the user experience.

The wallets are available in A4, A5, and A6 sizes, as well as plain or printed options.

“While plastic still has an important role to play in certain types of packaging, reducing reliance on single-use plastics where possible is an important criterion when we are exploring new products to add to our range,” says Amy Skingsley, packaging product manager at Antalis. “Paper strapping and documents enclosed wallets are great innovations that we’re excited to be able to offer our customers.”

The announcement comes after Antalis unveiled a new range of cotton twine wrapping and tying machines as a ‘100% natural’ alternative to traditional strapping. These utilize both fresh and recycled cotton that is apparently biodegradable after its intended use, thus helping to cut down on single-use plastic waste.

Similar to the lightweight, recyclable, and impact-resistant paper mailer revealed by Antalis last year, Amazon and Mondi have co-developed a paper-padded envelope with paper-based, shock-absorbent lining with the aim of eliminating plastic packaging components. Last week, the solution won a Sustainability Award under the E-Commerce category.
