Mondi and Polish supermarket chain Biedronka have developed Recyklobox, a corrugated board container for collecting returnable packaging covered by the deposit system, made from a mix of 80% recycled paper and 20% virgin fibre.
The container is made from five-layer corrugated board, said to ensure durability and stability. The structure consists of a lower section where bottles fall in, and a lid, which features a corrugated attachment enabling the installation of a scanner, as well as an opening for inserting bottles.
The companies say that compared with traditional machines used within the deposit system, it is a ‘significantly more cost-effective solution’ while delivering the same functionality. Apparently, the solution enabled Biedronka to collect 29,152,902 returnable bottles by the end of March, ahead of installing traditional machines across all of its stores.
Mondi and Biedronka previously collaborated to implement a closed-loop programme. The new project hopes to advance efforts to build a more sustainable retail model in Poland. The partners add that the new solution meets legal requirements and supports consumers in their everyday efforts to protect the environment.
This month Mondi Warszawa revealed its FreshFood BOX, designed to help online stores preserve fresh food in transit and intended to be a recyclable alternative to extruded polystyrene foam. The box features a tape-free closure to streamline recyclability without compromising on security, and ergonomic transport handles expected to unlock easy handling across the supply chain.
Earlier this year, Mondi teamed up with Pacapime Hungary to provide high-quality corrugated packaging for delivering fresh produce to its customers in Central and Western Europe. Mondi says its ProVantage SmartKraft Brown containerboard grade features a 100% fresh fibre top ply, ensuring high surface integrity and consistent quality.
