Supermarket chain Mercadona will acquire the reusable packaging supplier Logifruit in hopes of bringing together its logistics processes and contributing to a new circular strategy.

Mercadona anticipates that the acquisition will help it achieve ‘significant’ synergies, optimize resources, and strengthen its distribution network. It is also expected to enhance its assembly line and contribute to the development of a responsible logistics strategy in line with a circular economy.

In turn, Logifruit expects to keep developing its own logistics model to improve sustainability and customer service. As part of the acquisition, its 1,600 employees will become part of the Mercadona workforce.

David Cid, managing director of Logistics at Mercadona, says he welcomes the transition to ingratiate Logifruit into Mercadona’s logistics processes, which is hoped to bolster efficiency, innovation, and sustainability across the board.

Logifruit president Pedro Ballester also commented: “When we began working with Mercadona in 1996, we took on the challenge of providing a service tailored to its needs and capable of delivering competitive advantages.

“Three decades later, I am proud to say that Logifruit has met those challenges, achieving a level of specialization and efficiency we could never have imagined; and that now, through this strategic integration, will continue to be consolidated and add value to Mercadona and its suppliers.”

The agreement is subject to approval by the Competition authorities and standard administrative authorizations.

In other acquisition news, the European Commission recently granted unconditional approval for Mars$36 billion merger with Kellanova. Its investigation determined that, while both companies hold market power across various EU Member States, the deal would not inflate the merged entity’s bargaining power.

ProAmpac has also signed a definitive agreement to acquire TC Transcontinental Packaging from TC Transcontinental for around €1.28 billion. This is expected to add advanced capabilities in the dairy, meat, medical, and pharmaceutical end markets and bolster manufacturing capacity in North America, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
