Champagne house Maison Perrier-Jouët has collaborated with James Cropper to launch new cases for its Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Cocoon Brut and Rosé vintage cuvées, made from paper pulp and the flour from vine shoots.
Crafted along with Formafantasma design studio, the new design follows the Cocoon design created by James Cropper in 2023 for Perrier-Jouët’s Belle Epoque and Belle Epoque Rosé vintage cuvées. The James Cropper design team adapted the original linework to align with the cocoon wrap, integrating it into the tooling and demoulding process to achieve a 3D design. In a reported ‘industry-first’, intricate illustrations were printed onto the sculpted wrap.
Apparently 93% lighter than the champagne house’s traditional boxes, the new wrap doesn’t use any varnish or glue. Aiming to enhance the shape of the bottle and protect the wine from the light, it has a long hinge that fastens with a double locking clasp mechanism featuring the embossed Perrier-Jouët initials.
James Cropper’s moulded fibre production reportedly uses 100% renewable energy, with the majority of power being generated on site by the company’s own solar and hydro plants. The vine shoots used in the wrap are recovered after pruning at the end of winter, and apparently ensure the packaging is recyclable with other paper products and is circular in design.
James Cropper also worked with Scotch whisky brand Bruichladdich last year to develop a fully recyclable paper pulp outer wrap for its Luxury Redefined range. The coloured, fresh fibre wrap was said to be manufactured using 100% green energy and wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed, FSC- or PEFC-certified forests.
Later in the year, the company revealed it had created a process to recover and use cotton fibres from the UK’s polycotton waste stream and transform them into paper. The trials resulted in up to 98% of cotton fibres being successfully recovered, and James Cropper added that the new process has a published patent.
