Zwiesel Glas has teamed up with Mondi to package its mouth-blown glassware in bespoke fibre-based packaging, designed to protect the fragile products while offering consumers a ‘premium’ unboxing experience.
Produced at Mondi’s Grünburg corrugated solutions plant, the pack constitutes an outer layer made from 190g uncoated containerboard paper; it is decorated with offset printing, as well as embossed with the Zwiesel Glas logo and silver foil accents. Flexo-printed layers have been applied inside for a ‘refined’ visual appeal.
The packaging was created specifically for Zwiesel Glas’ Handmade collection, undergoing several redesigns to achieve its desired properties. The final design is thought to be suitably durable and enhance the product’s presentation with a tactile finish.
As such, it hopes to convey to customers ‘the quality and care inherent in Zwiesel Glas’ manufacturing process’ as well as ‘complement the craftmanship of the glassware’.
“Our handmade pieces are designed to create memorable moments,” said Lisa Müller, director of Brand & Product Management at Zwiesel Glas. “The packaging plays an integral role in delivering this experience from the first interaction.”

Another partnership between DS Smith has partnered with V. Roubis, creator of bfresh spitiko, seeks to replace traditional wooden trays with fibre-based e-commerce packaging when delivering juice products in glass bottles. The new packaging is set to perform the same function of holding and protecting the bottles in transit without utilizing polystyrene foam or air cushions.
Akarton has also announced that its Hexpand solution – which replaces plastic packaging and padding material with ‘100% recyclable’ corrugated cardboard – is now licensed for production and distribution in Europe. Its protective retention and suspension features are reportedly well-suited for valuable products like electronics, lighting fixtures, and spare parts, but can also be applied to everyday products like food.
In a different collaboration, Mondi is working with Biedronka in a closed-loop programme to supply, collect, and reproduce corrugated packaging. This is expected to further the retailer’s goals to reduce plastic consumption by 10% by 2025 against a 2018 baseline, and to lower CO2 emissions by 10% by 2026 from a 2021 baseline.
