Huhtamaki has revealed its new ice cream cups designed to be home and industrially compostable and recyclable, made from ‘responsibly sourced’ certified paperboard.
The cups contain a bio-based material coating as part of the company’s shift from fossil-based to bio-based plastics, while keeping plastic content to less than 10%. Huhtamaki hopes the new cups will help customers reduce their environmental footprint.
“Our new ice cream cups demonstrate Huhtamaki’s expertise in paperboard and barrier technologies, as well as our dedication to sustainable innovation,” says Fredrik Davidsson, president of Foodservice Packaging at Huhtamaki. He adds: “we are proud to offer a product that not only meets the highest environmental standards but also delivers the high quality our customers expect.”
Back in February the company introduced recyclable single coated paper cups designed for yogurt and other dairy products, said to be fully recyclable in Europe and contain less than 10% plastic content. Huhtamaki states that ProDairy is manufactured in Europe using paperboard made with renewable wood fibres, sourced from sustainably managed forests.
More recently, Huhtamaki joined forces with Lieferando to provide partnering restaurants with its corrugated paper delivery boxes, coated with Xampla’s plant-based polymer. Aiming to provide ‘plastic-free’ and ‘biodegradable’ packaging solutions for a broader range of dishes, the boxes are said to be suitable for transporting various food types including fatty foods due to their thermal insulation and high stability.
