Henkel has announced it will be presenting its new ‘anti-slip’ palletizing and end-of-life adhesives at FACHPACK this year, which will be taking place in Nuremberg, Germany from September 24th-26th.
The company states that ahead of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) bringing in new requirements to the packaging industry, it is already offering solutions that comply with the planned regulations.
The final vote on the packaging law is expected to take place in the Council of the European Union this fall, with the PPWR expected to set stricter rules for the recyclability of packaging and the use of recyclates, including a 100% reuse requirement for certain industrial and commercial packaging.
At FACHPACK, Henkel says it will focus on two products from its portfolio. One of the main topics is palletizing with hotmelt adhesives. The company’s hot melt adhesives from the Technomelt Supra PS range, designed to stabilize stacked goods during transport on pallets, instead of using large amounts of plastic film.
Apparently, the adhesive is applied to the packaged goods and prevents them from tipping through an ‘anti-slip’ effect, aiming to ensure safe transportation, allow higher stacking - depending on the content - and reduce the use of stretch film by up to 90 percent. It is also sad to eliminate the need for intermediate layers, reducing overall material costs by up to 80 percent.
Henkel claims that the elimination of intermediate layers allows for automated depalletizing, increasing process efficiency; and in one customer application, the cost of a pallet was reduced from €4.55 to €2.15 due to the material savings. Henkel hopes to fulfill two pillars of the PPWR with this solution: the recyclability of packaging and avoiding packaging waste. The palletizing solution is due to be demonstrated in an exhibit.
Henkel also plans to present its addition to the hot melt portfolio for end-of-line packaging. It states the product can reduce CO2 emissions, improve process efficiency and is fully compatible with the paper recycling process.
Henkel’s stand at FACHPACK will be in Hall 1, Stand 153.
In May, BOBST and Henkel partnered in a bid to pursue optimized machine operations, environmentally conscious adhesives and paper-based flexible packaging barriers. The companies plan to develop ‘sustainability-minded’ solutions including barrier solutions for flexible packaging utilizing paper and other substrates.
In similar news, Power Adhesives claims to have developed the ‘world’s first’ fully-certified biodegradable, shaped hot melt adhesive, aiming to boost the environmental credentials of its product portfolio. The certified tecbond 214B adhesive apparently breaks down in prolonged exposure to oxygen, ultraviolet light, and heat.
