At FACHPACK 2024, Syntegon will debut its PMX 4001 vertical bagger for ground coffee and whole beans – compatible with recyclable packaging materials and designed to produce protective, high-quality bags.

“Currently, many manufacturers do not or not fully meet the requirements of the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will take effect in 2030,” explains Christina Holm, product manager at Syntegon. “They are now looking for solutions.

“At the same time, aroma protection and quality remain crucial, especially for coffee. With the PMX 4001, we are helping our customers meet these requirements.”

Offering a ‘significantly smaller’ footprint than other PMX models, PMX 4001 can be used with both conventional and recyclable packaging materials.

Holm states that the machine was designed “to process alternative packaging materials at high outputs – up to 65 bags per minute with a pack weight of 500 grams.” This includes its sealing and ultrasonic technologies, the latter of which is said to apply to recyclable degassing valves.

It claims to handle products gently, integrate the application of valves, and offer gas flushing to minimize residual oxygen. As such, Syntegon asserts that the solution protects the coffee’s aroma and achieves a long shelf life.

Bearing in mind that coffee is a premium product, the PMX 4001 aspires for ‘extremely precise’ sealing seams for a high-quality appearance. Even so, with a low height and footprint of 2.6 x 2.1 meters, it is intended to be accessible to manufacturers with limited floor space and facilitate operation from all sides of the machine.

Synexio Empower, described by Syntegon as an Industry 4.0 solution, is a standard installation in the PMX 4001. This monitors machine functions and the consumption of energy and resources in real time – a feature intended to help manufacturers optimize their production process and maximize efficiency.

Reportedly, Syntegon provides manufacturers with practical testing on the machine, as well as material property testing in its in-house laboratory. FACHPACK attendees are invited to view a 3D animation of the machine at Booth 1-257 in Hall 1.

Syntegon also claims to provide mono-material degassing valves that protect the aroma of the coffee, thought to be ‘excellently recyclable’ in line with EU standards. It will showcase its mono-material VIS 10F coffee degassing valves, recently certified by the cyclos-HTP institute as recyclable throughout Europe, at FACHPACK.

The company previously announced that it would display its VFFS SVX Agile, which produces mono-material pouches; the Kliklok ACE carton erector, which forms glueless carton trays for cookies; and a horizontal line that packs bars in paper.

Meanwhile, the ‘world’s first’ mono-material vacuum packaging solution for coffee will be on show. Manufactured by Mondi for coffee producer Paulig, it will join a range of mono-polymer and paper-based packaging solutions on Mondi’s booth at Stand 204 in Hall 4.

In other bagger-related news, ValTara recently unveiled its Breezy Wrapper, which offers horizontal flow wrapping and vertical bagging in one machine and automatically adjusts films to fit the length of the product.
