ASDA and Podback

ASDA has partnered with coffee pod recycling service Podback to offer consumers the option to recycle their used coffee pods in over 600 of its stores.

Coffee pods are not suited for recycling through traditional routes due to their small size and because they contain organic material. Podback users can now recycle their used aluminium and plastic coffee pods by filling a Podback bag and returning it to the toYou parcel returns service in their nearest participating Asda store. Bags can be ordered from the Podback website.

The free to use Podback service was set up by Nestlé and Jacobs Douwe Egberts in 2021, aiming to make coffee pod recycling easy and convenient for consumers across the UK. Apparently, the coffee grounds are transformed by anaerobic digestion into renewable energy and soil improver, with the aluminium and plastic from the used pods being used in the manufacture of products such as drinks cans, building products and garden furniture.

Both companies hope the new service will encourage more coffee pod users to make recycling their pods part of their regular shopping routine. Customers can find their nearest recycling point and order free recycling bags through Podback’s online recycle checker.

Last May, Morrisons supermarket collaborated with Podback to rollout coffee pod collection points nationwide, hoping to make coffee pod recycling more accessible. Morrisons added that it was the first supermarket to support Podback by offering free coffee pod recycling bags in stores in 2022.

In September, Costa Coffee also worked with Podback to begin trialling coffee pod recycling in 142 Costa Coffee stores across the UK. Podback-branded recycling points were installed in participating Tesco stores and the scheme accepted plastic and aluminium pods from any Podback member brands, including Costa Coffee pods for Nespresso, Tassimo and NESCAFE Dolce Gusto machines.
