Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe) has announced it will be producing the ‘world’s first’ emerald green bottles from its NextGen Furnace for Jägermeister.
AGP-Europe has been producing the bottles for Jägermeister for over 20 years; both companies are now hoping to significantly reduce the bottles’ CO2 impact through utilizing the NextGen Furnace. AGP-Europe’s NextGen Furnace in Obernkirchen, Germany, began glass production at the end of 2023. The hybrid technology uses 42 electrodes said to enable up to 80% electrical heating.
The company states the technology has already been proven in the production of amber glass packaging: based on the operating parameters of using 60% renewable electricity for glass melting and a recycled content of up to 70%, the carbon impact of amber glass packaging has been reduced by 64%. The solar-powered renewable electricity comes from a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sunnic Lighthouse GmbH, and parent company ENERPARC AG, in Germany.
“The signing of a contract for up to 14 million 70cl bottles from the NextGen Furnace in Obernkirchen is a milestone in our long-standing partnership with Ardagh Glass Packaging. The production of our green Jägermeister bottles with this new technology aims to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 64% per bottle which, if achieved, will directly contribute to our sustainability goals,” explains Carsten Doliwa, vice president of Procurement at Mast-Jägermeister SE.
At the start of the year Ardagh Glass Packaging-North America (AGP-North America) introduced a new bottle colour and closure option to its 12oz Heritage glass beer bottle portfolio. The new bottles are available in flint (clear) glass with a pry-off closure and amber (brown) glass with a twist-off closure.
CCL Label recently revealed its EcoShear label optimized for one-way glass recycling, said to reduce label contamination to 2% and reduce landfill glass waste to 1.5kg per tonne. The new label is also said to maximize glass recovery and contribute to lower energy consumption.
