Syntegon’s advanced PMX packaging platform for coffee packaging now runs Constantia Flexibles’ EcoLamHighPlus mono-polyethylene material in pursuit of an ‘efficient, future-ready solution’ at no extra cost to brand owners.
The EcoLam range is fully RecyClass-approved, with EcoLamHighPlus said to offer ‘excellent’ recyclability in existing PE streams. It aims to maintain efficient packaging processes and adapt to future requirements while meeting increasing demand for sustainability-minded packaging solutions.
For sensitive products such as coffee, it is set to protect the product’s flavour and aroma while avoiding the environmental impacts of conventional, fossil-based plastics.
Meanwhile, Syntegon’s PMX platform is a modular packaging solution designed to be compatible with both conventional and recyclable materials without requiring additional modifications or investments.
As well as packaging ground coffee, the machine is said to process up to 65 packages whole coffee beans every minute, with a double tube version believed to reach up to 100 packages every minute. It is compatible with various bag styles and operates with quick format changeovers to offer a range of packaging formats.
The modular design intends to boost output efficiency and stay on top of evolving market demands while meeting specific customer requirements.
Syntegon’s Synexio Empower, an Industry 4.0 solution providing real-time monitoring of energy and resource consumption, is also integrated into the PMX platform. Manufacturers can use its condition monitoring and predictive maintenance to help optimize their overall equipment effectiveness, minimize downtime, and improve the efficiency of their plants – developments set to drive sustainability and achieve cost savings.
“Currently, many manufacturers are actively seeking sustainable packaging solutions to comply with upcoming regulations like the PPWR while maintaining high-quality standards,” says Christina Holm, strategic product manager at Syntegon. “The PMX platform, combined with materials like EcoLamHighPlus, offers an ideal solution.
“Coffee is a popular product whose quality must be protected. Our goal was to develop an efficient packaging machine that offers manufacturers enough flexibility for future changes and meets sustainability requirements.”
“Our partnership with Syntegon reinforces our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” added Tobias Acker, market product manager Beverages DACH & Benelux – Film & Paper Category at Constantia Flexibles. “With our EcoLam product family, customers have access to a flexible, designed for recycling, high-performance packaging solution that seamlessly integrates with state-of-the-art technologies like the PMX platform.”
Syntegon recently revealed its PMX 4001 vertical bagger for ground coffee and whole beans at FACHPACK 2024. Compatible with recyclable and conventional packaging materials alike, the machine has a ‘significantly smaller’ footprint than other PMX models and processes up to 65 bags per minute with a pack weight of 500 grams.
At the same show, Mondi showcased the ‘world’s first’ mono-material vacuum packaging solution for coffee, manufactured for coffee producer Paulig.
Constantia Flexibles has also teamed up with Greiner Packaging to unveil a home-compostable coffee capsule, certified by TÜV Austria. The paper-based EcoPressoLid is said to provide a high oxygen barrier and ‘exceptional’ sealing, with the solution said to be compatible with commonly used capsule filling and sealing machines on the market.
