Tata Steel Nederland has announced it has commissioned a new production line for packaging steel, said to be ready for upcoming legislation and improve logistical efficiency.
The company says the production process is on one site to simplify the supply chain. Tata Steel Netherland’s patented Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT) is used to produce the packaging steel.
The TCCT-Protact combination used in the new production line reportedly meets the strictest food safety standards, and no additional lacquer layer is needed at the customer.
Arne Hoogervorst, manager packaging at Tata Steel Nederland, said: “Our TCCT technology enables sustainable production of packaging steel and ensures compliance with future chemical-use legislation (REACH). Combined with Protact (polymer-coated packaging steel), TSN offers lower costs, fewer chemicals, and a shorter supply chain.”
Last year Tata Steel Nederland introduced a can-making machine at its R&D facilities which utilizes a dry forming process, said to reduce energy use and cut investment costs for customers. Able to produce up to 400 cans per minute, the machine serves as a proof of concept where customers can see the dry forming process in action at full industrial speeds.
In related news, last April the European Commission adopted the 2025-2030 working plan for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products and Energy Labelling Regulations, with steel and aluminium among the list of priority products to implement eco-design requirements and energy labelling within the next five years. Mandated product information will include the carbon and environmental footprint of products, largely provided via Digital Product Passport or, for products with energy labels, through the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL).
