Stora Enso has added an unbleached variant to its Trayforma tray board range, as well as reducing the basis weight across the existing range – aiming for a natural aesthetic and improved material efficiency.

Reportedly, the lighter Trayforma products match the strength, forming performance, and converting reliability of the existing base board. It is built on a three-ply structure and incorporates chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) in the middle layer; this is expected to reduce the basis weight while maintaining board thickness.

Less material per tray is anticipated to improve yield throughout the supply chain. A lower board weight is also expected to reduce carbon emissions in production and transit.

The unbleached Trayforma Brown maintains these benefits while unlocking a natural appearance.

According to Stora Enso, it is the first brown tray board to support oven heating – withstanding temperatures of up to 220°C with a transparent PET coating. Other potential applications include ready meals, bakery products, and chilled and frozen food.

Customers can also opt for a high-barrier BarrPeel solution for vacuum-skin packaging.

“For our customers, the natural look of brown board is increasingly relevant, but not at the cost of performance,” says Jaana Tani, technical account manager, Trayforma and Barriers at Stora Enso. “With Trayforma Brown, they don’t have to make that trade-off. And with our advancements in lightweighting Trayforma, everyone in the value chain benefits from better yield.”

Both Trayforma Brown and the lightweighted Trayforma range will be displayed at interpack in Düsseldorf (7th – 13th May 2026).

In other news, Sabert Corporation Europe has provided its PULP Ultra food packaging – made from 95% bagasse fibres and treated with a barrier spray coating – to Carambola for use as a certified recyclable, domestically compostable ready-meal tray for school dinners.

Amcor has also worked alongside Metsä Group and G. Mondini to develop a fully integrated fibre‑based tray system that combines a lightweight barrier liner and top web. This solution has been tailored for protein and chilled ready‑meal applications.
