Amcor, Metsä Group and G. Mondini have collaborated on a fully integrated fibre‑based tray system that combines a lightweight barrier liner and top web, tailored for protein and chilled ready‑meal applications.
Amcor says the AmFiber tray and film combination was developed in response to rising consumer confidence in more sustainable materials, aiming to offer brands a packaging format that enhances shelf appeal and supports environmental commitments.
The AmFiber tray is designed using Muoto, a recyclable moulded fibre packaging solution developed by Metsä Group’s innovation company, Metsä Spring, based on renewable wood sourced from northern forests. Reportedly, the fibre recovery rate for the tray with liner is greater than 80%, according to the CEPI recyclability laboratory test method Ver. 3 (2025).
The tray is complemented by Amcor’s range of advanced barrier liners and top‑web films to address different product applications. Designed for use with Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and skin technologies, Amcor says the solution can help reduce plastic use while prolonging shelf life. There is also an option to include convenience features such as microwaveable, ovenable, and easy‑peel options.
The solution will be featured at interpack from 7–13 May in Düsseldorf, where it will run live on G. Mondini’s Trave Streamline machine in Hall 5 / Booth F24. The packaging system enables trays to pass through the sealing process with reduced friction, improving production efficiency. G. Mondini’s digital printing capabilities also allow direct customization of fibre trays, said to enable strong brand differentiation while preserving a natural appearance.
In related news, Yangi has used its Cellera technology to produce a dry-formed fibre tray for meat, fish, deli, and ready meals – aiming to extend product shelf life, unlock a ‘premium’ surface quality, and achieve an ~80% lower CO2 impact. Integrated fibre chemistry is believed to unlock the appropriate outer properties for the tray, which has been tested for use in chilled, frozen, microwaveable, and oven food applications.
Last year The Wilkins Group and Jospak Oy unveiled the Greentrae cardboard tray for the food sector, said to be MAP-sealable and aiming to reduce plastic use and make recycling easier for consumers. The tray is suitable for microwave, freezer or oven use and is said to help cut both packaging and food waste.
