Sainsbury’s has launched new, home-recyclable cardboard cartons for its 750ml own-brand laundry detergents, expected to halve the range’s carbon emissions and help save 22 tonnes of household plastic waste every year.

Rolling out both in-store and online, the FSC-certified cartons will replace the traditional sleeved plastic bottles for the retailer’s super concentrated, bio super concentrated, non-bio super concentrated, colour super concentrated, and lavender super concentrated lines. It is reported that customers can recycle the new packaging at kerbside or deposit them at recycling banks.

Said to be 35% lighter than the original plastic packaging, the cartons are expected to take thirteen lorries off the road annually, reducing both plastic usage by 80% and carbon emissions of the own-brand laundry range by 50%. As such, they are anticipated to contribute towards Sainsbury’s goals of halving its use of own-brand plastic packaging by 2025 and becoming net zero in its operations by 2035.

The retailer also states that the laundry liquid itself has been reformulated to become super formulated, allowing for five additional washes per carton as a smaller amount of detergent is required per wash.

The announcement comes after Sainsbury’s announced that it would vacuum-pack its beef mince range in a bid to reduce an annual 450 tonnes of plastic and 55% of plastic per product.

Tesco has also replaced the plastic tubs of its laundry detergent pods with recyclable cardboard packaging, aiming to remove 252 tonnes of plastic from its portfolio every year; and Smurfit Kappa and PepsiCo have unveiled cardboard outer packaging for its Walkers crisp brand multi-packs to pursue a 250-tonne reduction of plastic from its supply chain.
