SalzburgMilch will package its dairy products in SIG’s on-the-go carton bottle, SIG DomeMini – a move set to balance functionality and shelf appeal.

The SIG DomeMini is designed for ultra-high temperature products like specialty milk and protein drinks, plant-based alternatives, and meal replacements. It is intended to match the convenience of a bottle format while achieving the environmental, logistical, and protective benefits of a carton pack.

Its closure is large, centrally positioned, and designed for easy opening and reclosing; these features are hoped to simplify on-the-go consumption straight from the pack, as well as secure the product in storage. At the same time, its unique shape is anticipated to stand out next to other cartoned products.

Apparently, the state-of-the-art SIG DomeMini 12 Aseptic filling machine can aseptically fill 12,000 DomeMini packages every hour. It is compatible with volume sizes between 180ml and 350ml on the same machine, with operators reportedly able to switch between volumes in 15 minutes.

Brands and retail partners are also expected to benefit from co-packing and private label opportunities, since SalzburgMilch’s location in central Europe is considered ‘ideal’ for logistics and distribution.

The on-the-go carton format will be available from European retailers starting in mid-2026.

“SalzburgMilch stands for premium quality and innovation that’s rooted in Austrian tradition,” says SalzburgMilch CEO Andreas Gasteiger. “Our close partnership with SIG allows us to pioneer this modern and convenient packaging solution for the European dairy industry and consumers, reflecting our strong commitment to excellence and innovation.

“We’re setting a new standard in convenient product experience, while also offering a packaging option with a high share of renewable materials.”

“We’re proud that Austria continues to be a hub for innovation – and that SalzburgMilch is taking a pioneering role as the first company in Europe to adopt our unique packaging solution SIG DomeMini,” adds Nino Schmid, key account manager Austria & Switzerland at SIG.

“We truly appreciate their forward-thinking approach and are confident that the eye-catching and convenient SIG DomeMini carton bottle will offer real added value to consumers with a unique combination of convenience, sustainability and shelf appeal.”

Last year, SIG provided its SIG MidiBloc and SIG MidiFit carton packs – as well as its Midi 12 Aseptic filling machine – for Bonafarm’s Sole-Mizo dairy products, including extended shelf life and ultra-high temperature milks. The partners sought to bring flexibility and efficiency to the production process, filling fill 12,000 carton packs per hour.

Aldi has since packaged its Rio d’oro grape juice in one-litre aseptic cartons made from SIG’s full-barrier, alu-free solution. Made from 80% paper and an ultra-thin polymer coating, the pack is said to match the barrier protection of standard SIG aseptic carton materials and reach a shelf life of up to twelve months.

In other news, Nissha Metallizing Solutions and Tetra Pak have jointly developed an aseptic beverage carton with a paper-based barrier, utilizing paper from FSC-certified sources. It is anticipated to help companies lower their dependence on non-renewable resources and improve fibre yield downstream.
